The Wels Catfish, also known as the common catfish, is the largest freshwater fish in Europe. It belongs to the catfish family (Siluridae) and is found in rivers, lakes and valley pools with muddy or sandy bottoms.
Appearance:
- It has an elongated, cylindrical body with a dark brown to black colour.
- The belly is white to yellow.
- The head is large and broad with whiskers around the mouth.
- The dorsal fin is small and triangular.
- It grows to a length of up to 5 metres and a weight of 350 kg, or more in rare cases.
Way of life:
- A nocturnal fish that rests in deep holes or under driftwood during the day.
- At night it actively hunts, feeding on fish, waterfowl, mammals and waste.
- It is a solitary species that congregates?? only during the breeding season.
- A powerful and predatory predator, it can catch prey much larger than itself.
Reproduction:
- It becomes sexually mature at the age of 5 to 7 years.
- Reproduces in May and June at water temperatures above 18 °C
- The female lays 10 000 to 300 000 eggs in a nest built by the male from plants and tree branches.
- The male takes care of the eggs and fry until they are large enough to live independently.
- It commonly lives to the age of 50.
