ORDER

The sazan, the native form of carp, is a freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family. It is a fish of economic importance that is found in rivers and lakes with fast-flowing currents and abundant vegetation.

Appearance:

It has an elongated, slender body covered with scales.
The colouration is olive green to brown on the back, the flanks are silver and the belly is pale.
It has four whiskers around its mouth.
The dorsal fin is long and curved.
It grows to a length of 1,2 metres and a weight of 40 kg.

Way of life:

A diurnal fish that resides in the middle and lower layers of water.
It feeds on organisms such as worms, insects, molluscs and plants.
It is a social fish that lives in schools.
A strong and hardy fish that can travel considerable distances upstream.

Reproduction:

It becomes sexually mature at the age of 3 to 4 years.
Reproduces in May and June in shallow waters with abundant vegetation.
The female lays up to 300 000 sticky eggs that stick to aquatic plants.
The eggs hatch after 3 to 5 days.
They live to the age of 40 years.
