The pikeperch is a species of fish in the perch family. It is a valuable species from both an economic and sporting point of view. Its original homeland is the Danube and Volga river basins, from where it has spread to Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Minor.
Appearance:
- It has an elongated, grey-green body with two dorsal fins.
- The back is dark green, the flanks silver and the belly white.
- The front fins are more segmented and firm, with dark spots.
- Relatively small snout with strong jaws.
- Grows to a length of 130 cm and a weight of 15 kg.
- Normally lives to 15 years of age.
Way of life:
- Inhabits large, slow-moving rivers, valley pools and ponds.
- It prefers deep, still waters with muddy or sandy bottoms.
- In summer it stays in shallower water, in winter it moves to deeper water.
- It lives in schools, hunting mainly at night.
- It feeds on fish, crayfish and aquatic animals.
- Demanding water quality and oxygen content.
Reproduction:
- It becomes sexually mature at the age of 3 to 4 years.
- Reproduces in April and May, the female lays 100 000 to 300 000 eggs.
- The eggs hatch after 10 to 14 days.
Meaning:
- The largemouth bass is a valuable economic fish.
- Tasty white meat with low fat content.
- It is also very popular for sport fishing.
