The northern pike is a predatory fish of the pike family (Esocidae) found in fresh waters of the northern hemisphere. It is one of the best known and most widespread freshwater predators in Europe, Asia and North America.

Appearance:

It has a cylindrical, elongated body with an elongated head.
Wide pointed snout with many sharp teeth.
Colouration is variable, but is most often green with yellowish spots.
It grows to 120 cm in length and weighs 15 kg, in rare cases more.

Way of life:

It is a solitary species that hunts by sight.
It prefers shallow waters with abundant hiding places such as aquatic plants, fallen trees or boulders.
It hunts with a sharp lunge from ambush and ambushes prey from cover.
It feeds on fish, amphibians, insects and small mammals.
It is a voracious and opportunistic predator.

Reproduction:

Reproduces in spring when the female lays 10,000 to 20,000 eggs in shallow water.
The eggs hatch after 10 to 14 days.
The young feed on plankton and small aquatic animals.
They can live up to 33 years.
