Northern Pike is a predatory fish from the Esocidae genus that occurs in fresh water of the northern hemisphere. It is one of the most famous and the most widespread freshwater predators in Europe, Asia, and North America.
Appearance:
- It has a cylindrical body with an elongated head.
- A wide spiky mouth with a lot of sharp teeth.
- Its coloration is variable but the most common is green with yellowish spots.
- Northern Pike grows up to the length of 120 centimetres and weights up to 15 kilograms, in rare cases even more.
Lifestyle:
- It is a solitary species and hunts using its sight.
- This fish prefers shallow water with lots of hiding places, such as aquatic plants, fallen trees or boulders.
- Northern Pike hunts from the back or from the side. It attacks the prey from its hiding place.
- It eats fish, amphibians, insects, and small mammals.
- It is a voracious and an opportunistic predator.
Reproduction:
- It reproduces in spring, when the female lays from 10 000 up to 20 000 eggs into shallow water.
- The eggs hatch after 10 till 14 days.
- Juvenile fish devour plankton and small aquatic animals.
- Northern Pike lives to the age of 33 years.
